JD 1020 - Hydraulic Noise

My uncle is in the process of overhauling a ~1967 JD 1020 (gas with 8 cyl pump). All is going well except this annoying noise coming from the hydraulic pump. It's a screaming/whining noise always present, except when actuating (lifting only). I'm told the fluid has be changed and the filter/screen has been cleaned.
I've seen a number of postings that suggest the problem may be air. Is that consistant with a screaming/whining noise described? How do you bleed the air? Any other ideas?

Thanks,
jct

Could be as simple as a loose drive coupling. When under load it jams tight and doesn't rattle.

Hmmmm,

Maybe I'm not as colorblind as I thought. I was under the assumption that all those old Johns made that rattlin' sound and thought it was just a normal thing.

Aren't they supposed to do that?

Allan

I have a JD 5020 that does exactually the same thing. I found the pump inlet screen plugged real bad, but that was not the problem, changed fluid and filter still have the noise. I know the noise in not right, it has been doing it for about three years. I don't use the tractor much anymore, but wish the noise was gone. Stan

When the closed-center pump make noise except when a hydraulic function is being used, the stroke-control valve is probably making the noise if it's internal, or the pump drive if it's external. The stroke control valve is a commom wear item. Your tractor probably has the little German 8 piston pump (13 GPM), not the bigger pump style like most of the other closed-center Deeres use. I mention that because the parts are completly different for the two little German pumps most 1020s use. They both look the same and are the same physical size, but one has 4 pistons and pumps 6.5 GPM, while the other has 8 pistons and pumps 13 GPM. The industrial version of the 1020 (the 300) uses the big style pump, and I've seen a few 1020s with that setup that were converted for loader use.

Those closed center pumps sometimes normally make noise. It would be very hard to tell if yours is extra loud without hearing it. Have you compared it to other tractors like yours ? You could have a leak in your system somewhere causing the pump to never go all the way out of stroke.
