JD 1020 - Hydraulic Noise

My uncle is in the process of overhauling a ~1967 JD 1020 (gas with 8 cyl pump). All is going well except this annoying noise coming from the hydraulic pump. It's a screaming/whining noise always present, except when actuating (lifting only). I'm told the fluid has be changed and the filter/screen has been cleaned.
I've seen a number of postings that suggest the problem may be air. Is that consistant with a screaming/whining noise described? How do you bleed the air? Any other ideas? Thanks,
