9N PTO Drive

I have a '39 Ford 9N. Went to sow some grass seed this weekend with a new PTO driven spreader, only to find that the drive shaft that came with the spreader was too long. Do these older Fords need shorter PTO drive shafts of do I need to look into getting longer lift arms - assuming they are available ?
