OT- Leather-less Mercedes

Seems the PETA folks have talked Mercedes into offering the option of cloth or faux-leather interiors. So thousands of cattle won't be needlessly slaughtered. I wasn't aware that cattle were ever slaughtered for their hides (and the meat, presumably, thrown away). Anyone ever heard of that? I used to work for a butcher as a kid, and one of my jobs was salting the hides (nasty). I think he got 10 bucks apiece for the hides, just a drop in the bucket compared to the value of the meat. BTW, I am also a member of "the other" PETA- People Eating Tasty Animals.
