OT- Leather-less Mercedes

Seems the PETA folks have talked Mercedes into offering the option of cloth or faux-leather interiors. So thousands of cattle won't be needlessly slaughtered. I wasn't aware that cattle were ever slaughtered for their hides (and the meat, presumably, thrown away). Anyone ever heard of that? I used to work for a butcher as a kid, and one of my jobs was salting the hides (nasty). I think he got 10 bucks apiece for the hides, just a drop in the bucket compared to the value of the meat. BTW, I am also a member of "the other" PETA- People Eating Tasty Animals.

I was looking to trade in my old pick up (with torn plastic seats) on a new Mercedes, but forget that now. The Mercedes most likely would not haul as much fire wood any ways and I would hate to think what hauling goats or pigs in the back seat would do to the cloth seats.

Just to see what they were saying about it, I went to the PETA website (peta.org). Sure enough, they were crowing- and saying that leather drives the cattle industry, because 2/3 of the value of the animal is the hide. I'd never heard such hogwash in my life- so I called a local slaughterhouse- hides are still about 10 bucks (he said they got as high as $60 once, but that was 9 years ago)- and a hanging beef is worth about $1,000 (800 lbs. at $1.25). So I sent PETA an email, and suggested that they might not be such a joke among mainstream folks if they would just quit fabricating all their "information".

PETA is a terrorist group, I wouldn't by a car, or truck from a company that let peta dictate how they build cars.

Personally I like cloth seats better anyway. Cooler in summer, warmer in winter, less sticky when humid, less slippery when dry, and less grief when they get damaged.

Eaucontrar, Mike. Indeed I have heard of butchering cattle for just their hides, and throwing the meat away. However, that was in the 1800's when a longhorn on the hoof would bring about $3.00. You're correct in your main thought though, haven't heard of it lately. Wouldn't buy anything made by a nip or a kraut anyway. Just plain unamerican. Later, Harley

Do you have any evidence that PETA is responsible for this change in the Mercedes product line?

The PETA people really are clueless aren't they. they think that the cows are killed just for the hide. Maybe we should get them to protest all the Nauga's that are being killed for their hides.

Fair enough. The PETA folks are extreem in their views.

It's too bad that we spend time on issues like this and no time at all on issues of genocide in the Sudan.

Don't really understand their (PETA) actions; aren't they the folks who pour/spray red paint on the fur coats of middle-aged matrons? Never hear of them doing that to leather-clad bikers; don't think they have the courage of their convictions..... ..

I dont know if this is true, but makes a good story. The story goes that one tough gal in her mink coat was confronted by one of those PETA nut jobs who threatned to spray red paint on her coat. The coat owner said,go ahead, spray the darn thing. My insurance company will buy me a new one,and YOU will have killed whatever number of mink it takes to make my new coat.

Thats because PETA considers the life an animal worth more than the life of a nasty human that might go out and eat the animal. Maybe Mercedes can offer seats upolstered in executed politcal prisoner skin. If they promote it as being made from a human who hurt the environment then the PETA whackos would stand in line to place their orders.

Sounds like a nice EXTRA COST option that Mercedes can sell to the PETA fruit cakes. What do you think, an extra 5 grand for a cloth interior?
