Hey Jerry, your right in that the oil should enter through the larger port and exit through the smaller port. Unless I misunderstood what you were saying though, the oil doesn't actually go "through" the gears. Instead it rides around the outside of each gear in the pockets created between the teeth and the pump housing. Regardless of that though, you are right in saying that a pump turning the wrong direction is actually putting the suction on the pressure port and discharging through the suction port. Unless it has some sort of internal valving that would prevent it, the pump will pump this way, the main thing is at high RPM there is the chance that the pump will start cavitating from low oil flow.
