What engine was in the Ranger? The 3.0 is not known for its power but its usually good for 200 as long as you change the oil once in the while. About the only thing that kills it is the water pump fails and the engine overeats warping the heads. The 4.0 is pretty good too, haven't heard to many engine problems with it, usually its the transmission that lets go - and thats in the heavier Exploder.
