Unless its changed - the 2.3L - 4 cylinder engine has been around since the Pinto with differant heads & intakes every couple years. The turboed versions (early & mid 80s) in the Mustang & T-bird where competing with the 302 engine in terms of top end power, but they had a bad habit of blowing the head gasket and frying the clutch. In its current form it's a low powered economy engine but is pretty reliable. In the late 80s they had issues with being over revved but computer controls has elminated that for the most part. What exactly do you mean by "come apart"?
