Same thing happened to me and it drove me nuts for awhile on a 766D. Every time I'd pull it under heavy load for a while, the darned thing would get hot.

Next time it is showing hot, very carefully pull the cap and see just how hot it actualy is.

Betcha it is nothing more than a bad sending unit/gauge.
