My Case IH 885 overheats during the summer when under aload.I have replaced the thermastat, water pump, radiator cap and had the radiator rodded out.The belts are tight and still has problems! So I sent the tractor to an independant repair shop where he replaced the head gasket and had the head checked for cracks. He said everything checked out fine no head problems and gasket wasnt blown. He says he cant find a reason for the overheating.Does anybody have any ideas what my problem might by? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Oh by the way the tractor has cab with A/C.

Check the pressure inside the radiator before it gets hot with a pressure tester that is used in place of the radiator cap. This will show if there is a gas leak into the coolant system. Also be sure there is a spring inside the bottom radiator hose to prevent the hose from collapsing and shutting off coolant flow.

I would find someone with a infared thermometer and check radiator. What is the temp going in to the rad and coming out. This will also say if it is really hot or not. We had one of these tractors for a main tractor at one time, work them hard and they will get hot.

In addition to what has been said, I would wonder what the power output of the tractor is, as tested... not rated. Could it be turned up, and is simply working too hard? Additionaly, it may be possile for the cylinder wall to be perforated and some compression could be pressurizing the cooling system in this manner rather than the head, since you know the head is good. Ford had some trouble with perforated cylinders about 20 years ago. Perhaps Case did as well, although that is a long shot. Like the other fellas have said, you may just have a bad sender/gauge. Check it with a known gauge, and go from there. Good luck.

Hi Rod,

That one of mine acted absolutely normal in every other way.

The temp gauge showed cold at start up, took a period of time to come to temp and worked just fine running mid gauge until I pulled it hard. Then it slowly just went over to the "hot" peg.

If I stopped at the end of the field and let 'er idle for a few minutes, it slowly would drop back to mid gauge just as you would expect. Head back up the field and up she would go to the hot peg again.

But, come to find out, the tractor really wasn't getting hot at all.

Darnedest thing I ever saw,

Allan

Hi Terry,

Same thing happened to me and it drove me nuts for awhile on a 766D. Every time I'd pull it under heavy load for a while, the darned thing would get hot.

Next time it is showing hot, very carefully pull the cap and see just how hot it actualy is.

Betcha it is nothing more than a bad sending unit/gauge.

Allan

My first question is "is it actually overheating?
What are the symptoms?
If cooling system and head etc have been checked out as OK, there is not much left.
Is the block full of solids from the coolant?
Or is the temperature guage just a bit optimistic?
give us a bit more information, like does it lose coolant, what sort of load is it under, what is the actual temperature when it shows the symptoms - ambient and coolant. Diagnosis from a distance needs all the information we can get in a CASE like this!
Regards, RAB
