Why the electoral college? Well, because it's in the Constitution. For those that haven't read it, it's in Article II section 1.

Now I realize the Constitution doesn't mean a heck of a lot to most people, especially those in public office, judging by the laws they pass, but it's a truly inspired document, and I very much believe the hand of the Lord was guiding the framers. I find it impossible to comprehend that a group of men could come up with it on their own. Now if you don't like a provision of the Constitution, by all means attempt to change it, work for it, fight for it, but don't expect that just whining about it will change things. But, don't expect my support. I think the electoral system is working just fine.
