Some of the reasons and how we ended up with the electoral college. At the time of its birth they said the common man was too stupid to properly vote. They said highly educated leaders of the community would represent.
They said high population areas could sway the elections.

My opinion; I think it was a process for the rich or in charge to keep control of the country.
I think it needs to be repealed if thats the origin.
I think its where the masses are anyway. If NY FL TX and CAL have the most electoral then the high pop areas have it anyway. I've never seen a candidate wooing N/S Dakota.
If a candidate wins with the electoral but loses with the populace what good is your vote? Who are you letting vote for you?

Why the electoral college? Well, because it's in the Constitution. For those that haven't read it, it's in Article II section 1.

Now I realize the Constitution doesn't mean a heck of a lot to most people, especially those in public office, judging by the laws they pass, but it's a truly inspired document, and I very much believe the hand of the Lord was guiding the framers. I find it impossible to comprehend that a group of men could come up with it on their own. Now if you don't like a provision of the Constitution, by all means attempt to change it, work for it, fight for it, but don't expect that just whining about it will change things. But, don't expect my support. I think the electoral system is working just fine.

Sounds to me like someone is still mad about "GW stealing the election from Gore." It may not be the perfect system but we have a "representative" form of government. It is all a part of having someone represent you. The interesting thing is the losing side is ALWAYS going to say they were cheated, direct vote or electoral vote. What would you be saying if Gore was president but GW had won the populus vote. I bet the system would be the best thing on earth. And if sKerry does not win this election the whining will continue.
One thing for sure, in the wake of September 11 I am glad that I had GW as my President. I wonder what sKerry's PLAN would have been had he been president. Or Gore for that matter.

Yep!!! Prefer original forum format. in reply to tlak, 10-14-2004 13:52:26
Does the new forum format still exist? Don't know. Haven't been there since tried it originally. I voted to keep it the same, but will gladly vote as many times as it takes to get my forum elected. Kind've how they vote in Chicago - The dead come back to life, vote, and die for four more years.

Vote, Vote, Vote for the old forum. No use changin something that is tried and true, only to replace it with something flashy that promises vast improvements, and has no record of such. I prefer substance over fluff. Hmm? Is there a parallel there to...

While I usually let these political post pass unnoticed because they only cause arguing I must comment on your post.

The electoral college was set up to stop large states from running the union.

While the majority in one state could vote for one person and their college could vote for someone else I do not think that has ever happened. The college for a state has always followed the vote of that states people as far as I know.

As far as a majority of the people in the US voting one way and the college voting another way that is why it was set up in the first place. It may not be perfect but it is our system.

With out crunching the numbers lets say a candidate said what the people of NY; FL; CA; and TX wanted to hear. They could then get a 99% of the vote from these states and 0% from the other states and still win. I do not want the same things as some one in CA and NY. In fact most of rural America does not. The college allows the people in rural America to have a voice by stopping this.

In other words it does not matter if you get 51% or 100% of the votes in a state you still get the same number of votes. This stops the people from large states from getting together and running the country. Without the college rural America would not have a vote.

The big states do run it. They have the most votes so the candidates go after them. NY has 31 electoral votes with 58% for Kerry and 35% for Bush. So NY will use all its electoral votes for Kerry with the 35% for Bush not counting for anything. If it was a popular vote Kerry would get his 58% and Bush 35% and add up all the states and at the end the one with the most wins.
Heres a link with how each state is leaning with their electoral votes and if you move you pointer over a state it will show you the percentages.
There has been a president who lost the popular vote and won the presidency by the electoral.
It also shows the percentages for Gore/Bush and most of the states show Gore winning.

I have to agree with you on the need to do away with the electoral college and go to a popular vote. Otherwise what does that say about the concept of one man one vote. It is just intuitively wrong not to have the majority pick the winner.

I guess reread what Ive said and Steve(OR) said maybe it will make sense to you the second or third time. If your so proud of fighting for the right to vote keep fighting to make your vote count not let somebody vote for you. Voting now is like going in a phone both thats not hooked up. Your dialing but nobodies home.

You must have skipped Civics. Learn how the process works. Thats it. Proud to vote or not. Learn what happens rather than spout ignorance. If you don't have a concious drive to vote at least work on the intelectual aspects. Then post a line worthy of debate. That is it for me. Never argue with an idiot they drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

I've speant to much time with this discussion.

This is a sentence from the link I posted maybe you should "Learn how the process works"
This policy is highly controversial because the electoral college is disproportionately represented by smaller states, which may result in election of the candidate who has received fewer votes.

Wife and I already voted: We liked Bush over the empty suit that that has been nothing but a complainer for his whole life and no record of fixing anything.
