Top Link Adjustment Bar

I had to buy a new top link at TSC. Yet again, I was puzzled at what you are supposed to do with the bar that comes taped to the side and is meant to turn the top link to adjust the length. Are you supposed to just hammer these things in with brute force? They don't readily fit through the hole.
