Tractor running rough...

Had a heck of a time getting my Ford 861 started last night after it had set outside (rain) for about a week. Finally got it started but really ran rough. Backfired under load a couple of times. I finally shut it down, not wanting to do any serious harm. Need to get some mowing done in the next few days though. Any thoughts where to start looking for a problem?
