The distributor cap took some moisture inside, which could have resulted in some arcing and resulting carbon tracks which will result in misfiring and backfiring. Remove the cap and inspect closely, you may be able to wipe it out with a clean, dry cloth and all will be well again. If this doesn't work, replace the cap with a new one. While you are at it, wipe off the plug wires so that they are clean and dry also.
