I go with Polish Mike and moisture in the distributor cap. Backfiring was probably tracking across cap.
But could be water got in exhaust and now have a sticky valve.....
If it won't go, deternmine whether it is ignition or fuel. Do you have a sediment bowl on this fuel line? If so, check it for water.
