crusty overall

Slightly off-topic, but since I wear them while on the tractor,
maybe not: how can one get these brown canvas overalls to
soften up already? Great things to wear, front pockets are
super handy for the cell phone and pencil, but there must be a
way to get them more like cloth and less like sheet metal! Every
time I wash them (5 so far) they seem to get harder and crustier.
Any advice most appreciated.
