I don't know what brand of mower it is but if it is a newer belt drive then he needs to read the manual, many of these mowers had the capability of changing the speed of the sickle bar by adding or removing spacers in the belt pulleys, effectively changing the diameter of the drive and driven pulleys. No need to change from 540 to 1000.
