Back in 1999, I bought my first computer from Gateway. The computer was OK, with a 400mHz Celeron processor...big for '99, but slow by today's standards. Had no problems to speak of with the equipment...but, not knowing any better, and having been advised by friends to avoid AOL like the plague, I went with Gateway's internet service. It was advertised as "unlimited" at $19.95 a month. So the month I got the bill for $72, I found out that THEIR definition of "unlimited" service was something different than that used by the rest of the world, and that they stuck to their guns for the $72. That same day, I got a disc in the mail from Earthlink. I called Earthlink and explained my "failure to communicate" with Gateway. The Earthlink spokesperson explained to me that they had the same definition of "unlimited" as I did, and for the past 4 years I've been overjoyed with my service from Earthlink. So, since that $72 has cost Gateway approximately $1000 in business since--plus it helped me decide to purchase a DELL when I replaced the Gateway computer, for yet ANOTHER $800 or so--I guess they got their money's worth from me. I may not be SMART, but I don't FORGET who tried to SCREW me, either.

To the newcomer that wants to get out and use the machine for field work, you may have already hit a major roadblock. That is the dreaded "proprietary hitch". With the exception of the
