OT....calling all carpenters

Off Topic here, but I need some suggestions.

I'm going to put a rafter peak roof over a flat roof. The span is 24'. I want to tie the ends of the bottoms of the rafters together with 2x4's to prevent them from spreading.

I'm thinking of using one 14' 2x4 at each rafter end and overlapping in the middle. One 2x4 on each side of the rafter and using a 2' piece of 2x4 at the overlap for nailing it together.

Will this method be sufficient? does any one have other suggestions?
