Off Topic here, but I need some suggestions.

I'm going to put a rafter peak roof over a flat roof. The span is 24'. I want to tie the ends of the bottoms of the rafters together with 2x4's to prevent them from spreading.

I'm thinking of using one 14' 2x4 at each rafter end and overlapping in the middle. One 2x4 on each side of the rafter and using a 2' piece of 2x4 at the overlap for nailing it together.

Will this method be sufficient? does any one have other suggestions?

thanks

not much strength in a 14' 2X4. you can build a good rafter with a 2X6 but better yet with a 2X8 if you got any kind of snow load. dont go cheap, its yours for a long time...

also- trusses aint much if you are doin the work alone. i built both ways many times. dont give a squat for trusses most of the time, except for long spans and using a crane...

mostly though have fun with your project and take pride in your work. slapdash is a poor reflection on you when it falls in!!! hahahaha--- mud

Here is a drawing of how truss rafters should be built. Alot depends on your roof load- snow, shingles, steel or whatever. You may want to check with your local lumber yard or Menards or Home Depo as you can buy truss rafters cheaper than you can site build them. For a building 24 ft in width the top cords will have to be 13 ft with no overhang. That is for a 4/12 pitch. If you go with more pich than that you should use 2x6's and then you are talking more $.

There are a thousand answers to your question, but none of them are right until we understand EXACTLY what you are trying to do.

Wood is not designed for tensional strength.

The only bit of advice I can offer is to use trusses.

if you are not removing the flat roof. then run the rafters parrell to the rafters in the flat roof and you have your ties.
either one of your choices work fine, however I would only tie every 8'. I tied my last building 26x32 in the middle only no problems.
