Battery goes dead

When I shut down my MF, with a diesel, with the fuel shut off lever, and dont turn off the key the batt drains because the battery hot wire is still connected to the alt. and drains the battery over night.None of the indicator lights are in the system, so there is no drain there. I am not a electronic wiz but is it possible to put a diode in the system, which I believe lets current travel only in one direction? I know just turn the key off when I shut it down. About the only thing I dont forget is supper time.
