1999 Ford F-350 4X4 trans. failure

Just bought a used f-350 and the transmission went out a little over a month latter.Should I bite the bullit and have a Ford dealer replace it or go to a transmission shop (AMCO)? The truck is diesel, 4x4, with 80,000 miles. Anyone else ever had problems with these tranmissions? Thanks in advance for all the help, you all are the greatest source for information I know of.
