I have to add a reflection of this thread. I was surprised to see that people were having trouble with the automatic trans. Out here(west) with all the long mountain pulls and RV use that I see, I don't hear about anyone being disappointed with the automatics behind the powerstrokes. In fact, with the power chips and banks shift kits I see I'm amazed that they don't blow them by the dozen. The Manual transmissions seem to fail regularly, we have replaced several of them with new from ford cause when the manuals die, they are junk. As an example, I had a guy come in Friday with a 98 powerstoke with an automatic that had 238,000 miles on it and he pulls a heavy 5th wheel. Now, he came in with a trans code set and I think he may end up with needed a new one but over 200,000 miles isn't unusual. Had one awhile back that was a delivery truck for a trailer manufacturer with over 300,000 on it and it was engine and trans original. So, I, in my own little world, would be hugely disappointed if my ford auto trans went south at only 80,000 miles. I do recommend and push that RV trans be serviced every 20-25,000 miles. I also would not use an aftermarket air cleaner on the powerstoke. The 2600 $$ is a competitive price for a NEW trans, stock torque convertor and installation. I would also replace the cooler at the same time.
