Thanks for the suggestions and encouragements.

Shifter top is off. Some rust on gears - doesn't look too bad. Splines have rust 1/2 way around and sliding gears are stuck.

Now what? I'm soaking it with Liquid Wrench and Kroil and tapping on the gears periodically.
