TRANNY HAS WATER!

My free 2N wasn't such a great deal after all. When I unscrewed the filler plug I found moisture everywhere inside. Water would splash out the hole when I ran the engine.

What now? Junk the 2N? Drain & flush with diesel? Dry the inside of the tranny with a hairdryer or vacuum cleaner?

Should I then refill with 90Wt. and run it?

All help and suggestions are greatly appreciated.

It may take a couple of drains and refills to get all the water out. There may be some places that don't drain completely, hold water. I wouldn't let it sit to "air out", letting air at the damp gears could cause rust. I think it would be better to refill it right away and run it to get the oil on to everything. It may not have rusted too bad as rust needs air to happen and air may have been blocked from getting to the parts even though they were in water as the oil left would have been a seal between the water and air, oil being lighter than water. If you change the oil and it starts to look like a tan color then it still has water in it. If you let it settle a while, maybe a a few days you may be able to drain the water that is left from the low spots "drain plugs" where it will settle.

My first Cockshutt 570 had 90% water in the tranny when we first drained it. Let it dry for a day or so, fill it with prescribed oil and forget it. Check it in another ten years.

Its a pretty commen problem with tractors that sit outside. Rain water can find it's way in if all the shift boots and such arnt in good shape. I'd drain it, flush it out and then let it drain for a day. Fill it back up, and you might be surprized to find all is ok. Any free tractor is a good deal.

I bought a A/C Model M a while back, drained about 3 gal of water out of the trans. I was not very happy when I saw that.I had to take the trans top off to clean the break drums, as they were also water soaked and rusty. I washed the trans out and filled it with oil. It has worked good with no noticeable problems I have probably put 200 hrs on it since cleaning. From your other post you may need to remove the trans top and check things out. Since it was a freebee, you woulnt be out much except for a little time. Have fun. Stan

Thanks for the suggestions and encouragements.

Shifter top is off. Some rust on gears - doesn't look too bad. Splines have rust 1/2 way around and sliding gears are stuck.

Now what? I'm soaking it with Liquid Wrench and Kroil and tapping on the gears periodically.
