That is afterfire. The fuel in the cylinder is still burning when the exhaust valve opens or there is unburned fuel in the cylinder that is pushed out into the hot exhaust manifold and pops off. Lots of reasons but that is basically what's happening. Some thoughts: Cold air is more dense and tends to lean out the mixture. Excess air can cause a slow, incomplete burn. Too rich a mixture will do the same thing. Cold engine, is the thermostat working? Late timing? Points corroded?
