My tractor is backfiring out the muffler when I give it more gas. At an idel the tractor runs good. It ran fine this summer it start to backfire after the cold weather came. I changed the fuel filter and added dry gas to the tank. That didnt help I added mystical oil or something like that to the gas to lube internal parts. I changed the plugs. Took the carb apart everything looks good in the carb. I also change the oil and filter. Anyone have an idea what to look at next?

A couple weeks ago, I was conversing with a gentleman from the Netherlands. He described a similar problem with his tractor... I advised him to check several things... ended up being the POINTS!!! I read your previous post... from the factory, the points were under the distributor cap. You take off the dist. cap, the rotor, then you're looking at the points. If there are no points, you need to trace wires leading from your distributor. A very wise old mechanic once told me... 99% of carburetor problems are electrical. When I have an engine that's not running well... I check the ENTIRE electrical system before ever touching the carb!!! If you start turning screws on the carb right away, you're generally just making a lot of extra work for yourself!

What kind of tractor?First thing I think of in cold weather is Oil bath air cleaner has ice in it restricting air. Second thing I think is fuel mixture then Timing. It doesn't hurt to do a careful visual inspection of ignition parts on a gas outfit.

The tractor is a John Deere 2010. The oil bath was cleaned out. Ive played with the power neeedle on carb and the choke. Some change but then it acts up again. Im not sure what to do with the ignition. Has new cap rotor and wire this summer.

That is afterfire. The fuel in the cylinder is still burning when the exhaust valve opens or there is unburned fuel in the cylinder that is pushed out into the hot exhaust manifold and pops off.

Lots of reasons but that is basically what's happening.

Some thoughts:

Cold air is more dense and tends to lean out the mixture. Excess air can cause a slow, incomplete burn. Too rich a mixture will do the same thing.

Cold engine, is the thermostat working?

Late timing? Points corroded?

I agree with Joe. Lean fuel mixture causes this. Try holding the choke on slightly and see if the engine begins to run smoothly. If if does, even after reaching operating temperature, carb readjustment is needed.

Ive played with the choke while running. Some change but doesnt last long it starts popping again. The temp of the tractor is not up to full operating temp but it is only 10 degrees out. I have also played with the power screw on the carb and not much help.

Ill double check the ignition. I didnt see anything bad before. Im running it at night in the dark and dont see any spark off the wires. One thing im not sure of is the points. I have not found them. Its John Deere 2010 and not sure if the ignition has beenn updated from points. Should they be under the cap? They are not there could they be located somewhere else?

Frank,
Mine ran a lot better after I adjusted the valves, put new plug wires on, plugs, coil, condenser, points, new carb kit by the dealer, but the most important thing I did was put a shut off valve on the fuel line. Evidently the carb would not completely shut off the flow of gas and it would smoke and was very hard to start. Mine is also very cold blooded. I never move it until the temperature gauge is in the normal operating range. Happy with it now.
