Gharging

I have a 52 8N that has some charging problem. When I bought it it wasn't charging, so I rebuilt the generator. put in a new amp meter. and a new regulator. When this was done the ampmeter shows a constant output of 30 amps when the RMPs are at 1800 and above. It operated this way for about 20 hours, and then the other day it stopped charging. What I've read states that this (30 amps) is excessive, but I don't know how to reduce it. As it stands now I am going to buy a new regulator and try again. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
