I have a 52 8N that has some charging problem. When I bought it it wasn't charging, so I rebuilt the generator. put in a new amp meter. and a new regulator. When this was done the ampmeter shows a constant output of 30 amps when the RMPs are at 1800 and above. It operated this way for about 20 hours, and then the other day it stopped charging. What I've read states that this (30 amps) is excessive, but I don't know how to reduce it. As it stands now I am going to buy a new regulator and try again. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

the generator has two terminals A and F. if you ground the F terminal and connect the A to the battery (non grounded side) and start the tractor, you will get full current and full voltage. this is a test of the generator. (you can run the "A" thru the amp meter for testing.) do this to see if the generator is still good. measure the voltage output across the two terminals while running.--- i would guess your regulator is shot.

Sounds like the regulator might be stuck. Check it out and also check the generator out, as the faulty or stuck regulator may have burned out the generator.

Fred,

I think you'd better get a generater also. When they are run wide open like that, they will cook themselves.

At the very least, have it tested.

Something is either wrong with your battery (dead short) or you have a short circuit in the field circurity making that generator pump full bore all the time.

The amp gauge should always creap back towards "0" after just a few minutes time in operation of a generator.
