Let's say you are baling hay, and the windrow gets a little thick. The baler starts bogging down, too much hay for the speed you are moving. So, you push in the clutch to stop moving. Without live pto, THE BALER ALSO STOPS getting power. So it plugs up, and you are sitting there digging hay out of the baler on a hot day. (Yes, a person learns to plan ahead, & you can shift quick to get by, but it's a chore.) With live pto, you push the clutch in part way to stop moving forward. But the baler keeps getting power, & clears out the hay, & you can either shift down to a slower gear, or continue on. With independent pto, you can shift either the tractor tranny or the pto shaft in & out of gear at any time, totally independent of each other. This is really nice. But practically, the live 2-stage clutch is really good too, and people have mis-used & interchanged these terms sometimes. An over-running coupler is just like a socket set rachet - it locks up in one direction, & lets the implement freewheel in the other. You want live - whether 2-stage or independent. --->Paul
