Hauling your tractor and the D.O.T.

I have been reading several postings lately concerning new federal regulations that are affecting the old tractor hobby.
To shed some light on this subject, I will relate my experience.
The new regulations were put into effect January 1, 2003. Please note, this is not pending legislation, it is in effect now! To be completely legal, even with a half ton truck and car trailer, you need to register your vehicle with the D.O.T. and you will be issued a set of numbers which need to be displayed on the side of your truck,(just like the big rigs) this will cost app. $350 each year. Now that doesn't sound too bad, but here is the sticker. Before you can even apply for these numbers, you need to have $750,000 liability insurance and at least $10,000 cargo insurance. Guys, I checked into getting this kind of insurance, it is not available from your normal insurance carriers. You have to get it from a commercial insurance writer, in my particular case, this kind of coverage will cost me $6,000 per year. Yes I said six thousand dollars each year, plus I would no longer be able to use this truck for personal use of any kind other than to pull my trailer.
I am sure I am not alone in this, it affects all of us, and if this new law is enforced, it will very effectively kill the old tractor hobby, and the industry that caters to it.
In short, each and everyone of us needs to write a letter to our congressman, and protest this new legislation.
By the way, none of the new laws will effect the campers and R.V.ers. some of these rigs are even larger than what any one of us will be hauling down the road, and are driven by people with no experience. Enough said for now.

Today's Featured Article - The Day Mom Drove the 8N - by Brian Browning. My Dad was wanting to put in a garden but couldn't operate the 8N and handle the old horse drawn plow he had found and rigged up to use with the tractor. Well, he decided to go get Mom out of the house and have her drive the tractor while he walked behind the plow. You got to understand that while my Mom is a hard worker who will always help whenever she can... she had never operated farm machinery before that day. Dad got her out there, explained how the clutch was the same as in our o ... [Read Article]
