The flat headed Continental engines that have a lot of hours on them develop a bad case of worn out valve guides and therefore have been known to smoke very badly. The guides are not too har to replace, with the head off you can see a definite pattern where the oil is being pulled across the block from the valves into the cylinder head. Have seen people replace rings or even rebore engines and still not cure the smoking problem of worn guides. With the head off, and the valve lifted up by the camshaft, shake it and see how badly it flops, more than.005 flop= smoking exhaust in proportion to amount of wear, been there done that. Gene Davis
