The original 6V system performs just as well as any other DC system - IF PROPERLY MAINTAINED! In my opinion you are creating work and spending money you need'ent trying to build an 8V system. The usual problem is using 6ga. battery cables designed for 12V systems on a 6V system. The small cables will not carry sufficient current for the 6V system. "0" ga cables are called for, however you can get by with 2ga cables on a 6V system if all connections are clean and tight, connected to a quality battery.
