To do a valve job or not ?

Have the head off a little import pickup truck here and the head gasket is gone and that needs replacing I was losing and burning coolant). The truck has about 120000 miles on it and the engine seems in pretty good mechanical shape. I was considering getting the valves done, they look OK and the guides are probably worn a bit BUT somebody once told me that just doing a valve job (without doing the lower end) can lead to other problems. Ever hear of that? What problems might he have been thinking of? What's your opinion on the question?
