I'll toss in my two cents on the whole parts cost issue. I'm a JD tech and I also have old tractors of my own that I work on. Whenever possible, I deal with our dealership. I get a good price on parts, but I can also get far more than just good prices. No restocking fees if I return it, no questions asked on returns, and so forth. And I can hold the part in my hand and see if it's right before paying for it. I've also been involved in situations where guys have come in looking for technical advice on their old tractors. I'll copy off service manual pages, loan out my books or whatever else I need to do to help them with their projects. That's called customer service - even if the guy hasn't bought part one from us, he's sure likely to think about us in the future. Try that with your out-of-town or state aftermarket supplier. You're not a name and a face to them - you're a credit card number or bank account. Not to mention that the $$$$ you spend at your local dealership is likely to stay in the community. If the dealer doesn't have or can't get the parts, you'll have to look elsewhere, but I encourage everyone to give your local dealership a chance - regardless of color. Unless, that is, your local economy doesn't need the support of their business. Is that aftermarket supplier buying space in high school yearbooks, providing farm safety camps and so forth?

But pretty soon you'll probably need to tinker with it a bit and maybe buy a part or too. Having a manual is nice. But how does one go about dete
