Question from my 78 year old Dad

He was in the service in Austrailia in during WW II. We wre talking the other night, and dad mentioned some sort of a device they had on their cars and tractors that burned local organic things for fuel as there was no gas available. On cars, he said it was on the rear bumper. On tractors, he thought it was on the side somewhere. If any of my fellow tractor people can help out with information or a drawing, we would be grateful.
