My late father told of the "wood-gas generators" during the "Great Depression", which in a sense made its own fuel from the charcoal produced, and of other tricks as burning fuel oil and kerosene by wrapping tubing around the head pipe of vehicles to heat it up to a explosive temp. before entering he carb. Not to mention filling tires with oats because they could not afford inner tubes, though you had to go through this laborious task once a week, while the tires made rooled oats of them.
