Lots of good advice below. I'd add a couple of specifics:

Stick with gas engines to start. Anything between say, 1935 and 1955 would be a good starter, for the following reasons:

1. There's a ton of 'em.
2. Lots and lots of them are still running.
3. Parts are available.
4. They're dead simple to work on.
5. There's lots of advice available.

Any small-to-medium (say 20 horse or so) 4 cylinder (I'll get to JD's in a minute) gas engine with minimal electrics. Farmall F12/F14/F20/A/B/C/H/M, Allis-Chalmers B/C/WC/WD, the smaller Olivers and Cockshutts, any of the Ford N series, Massey-Furgeson equivalents, Massey-Harris Pony and others, and on and on.

If you have NO experience with mechanics, I'm not at all sure I'd recommend starting with a two-cylinder John Deere. The engine layout makes it quite a lot harder to work on, whereas with most of the tractors I mentioned above you can remove the engine and hang it on an engine stand to do the greasy stuff. That's just my opinion, if you get a deal on a JD or want one 'cuz Granddad had one, by all means, go for it.
