The gas start diesels built by IH had a complicated head casting that involved having a second combustion chamber for running on gasoline. There were valves that opened to enlarge the combustion chamber and lower the compression, at the same time valves in the intake manifold switched to suck air through the carburetor. This was a complicated linkage that needed to be adjusted correctly, but worked great when maintained properly. Once the tractor was up and running on gasoline you would move the throttle up to kick in the diesel pump and flip the compression lever to close the valves and disconnect the carburetor and it would then run on diesel. These were good engines and VERY reliable when operated correctly. To shut down you first idle in diesel mode for a few minutes to allow the engine to cool, then switch to gas for a little bit to clear the combustion chambers of diesel fuel (makes it easier to start next time). Then you shut off ignition and flip the compression lever back to diesel so that the valves can cool properly without warping. The problems with these engines came from people operating them like they were gas engines - they did not let them warm up or cool down properly. These were the first diesel engines in a farm tractor. For the time they were well engineered and reliable. ---- If you don't believe me about the warming up and cooling down, take a brand new diesel tractor start it up and head down the field under full load right away, continue under full load for one hour then shut it off as soon as you are out of the field. You WILL crack the head because diesel engines are not made for that kind of abuse. Steven
