Trailer lights

Having a little trouble with my trailer lights. the tailights and turn signals work fine but when I hit the brakes all the lights on the trailer go out. I'm wondering if a bad ground would cause this. The wireing looks to be pretty old, we got the trailer last fall and haven't used it alot yet. Does anybody ave a good idea where to start?
