I have a 99 Dodge Cummins with an automatic and also had a 95 Cummins with an automatic. The transmission itself is not that bad. The weak point is the torque converter. However, I am still running the stock converter in mine. I have pulled as much as 27000 GVW truck and trailer) over 100 miles and had no trouble (I know that was way too much but we had a truck broken down and had no choice). If you try to drive it easy with a load, the torque converter will shutter, but if you "drive it like you stole it" and keep the rpm's above 2000 it does fine. My regular load is app 20000 GVW and it handles it fine. Both trucks are 2500 series. And yes I can run with the powerstrokes and duramax, the only different is when we stop for fuel it ALLWAYS takes more for them to fill up, and we have traveled on several long trips (1000 -1200 miles) together.
