oil bath air filters

I have a M F 205 industrial that is almost done but I need some advice. I have been looking at the oil bath air cleaner and I have some questions. Do they do a good job? What concerns me the most is, have you ever seen an engine suck up some of that heavy steel wool? My tractor is a 1964, did they use these filters very much after mine? It is hot around here,90 +,so what oil do I put in it?
Sorry about all the Questions But folks have been telling me to change it .But they can't give me a good reason. I don't change things because some slick new gimmick is supposed to be better, If the old filters don't cause problems I will keep it!
