I would go to the bone yard and get a dry element filter off a rice burner like Kuhbootuh or the likes. They're small enough to hide under the hood and still have plenty of air flow. If you don't want to do that or can't find one you can add the mesh to what you have now. I have put quilt batting in them before. It does better than metal mesh. If you get the nylon batting like they have at Walmart it's cheap enough and handy enough to throw away and put in new everytime instead of cleaning at service intervals.
