I think that before the air in an oil bath goes through the oiled mesh it makes a 180 degree turn just above the oil cup and the heaviest particles keep on going straight- into the oil in the cup where they are trapped and settle to the bottom where you find them caked into a mud. Then what is left in the air goes through the mesh and has to make a lot of more turns whrere as others have said more dirt is trapped.
