Unless I'm missing something, you should get just as much spark whether the resistor is between the battery and the coil or between the coil and the distributor. The amount of energy stored in the coil is proportional to the current traveling through the coil, and the current should be the same regardless of where the resistor is at.

I think that the resistor is usually on the high side of the coil just because it's simpler to wire it that way. Especially since it should be fastened to a heat sink of some sort.
