Nolan........since I was repairing car radios in the 50's, I am confident in my assertion, negative ground became the 12 volt standard BECAUSE the germanium NPN audio power transistors (and germanium power transistors were the ONLY POWER transistors available at that time) required HEATSINKS and that they used the radio chassis as the heatsink. (this was in the days before aluminum extrusion fins). I thought transistor car radios were neat because they didn't require buzzing vibrator power supplys. But they weren't as sensitive to weak radio stations as vacuum tube radios were. And when you lived in the mountians, that was a real problem. Ah yes, those wonderful Blaupunkett and Grundig boat anchors ...er... radios in european cars. And the wonderful reputation of Lucas electrics......those were the days.......respectfully, Dell
