Lawyers have tremendous impact on manufacturing decisions. On both the start and stop ends, as well in the middle. From product liability to patent infringements, and about a zillion other aspects. Radios and such may well have been a big factor, I shant argue the possibility. I've never encountered a single source that ever showed me a definitive answer or point in time where the negative ground standard was established (I did stumble onto a possible 12 volt standard establishment once). I'm not attempting to refute your background on radios. If you were building US made radios for US made cars though, that's not the same as building them world wide. It's rather simple to use insulation and isolate the heat sinks from the chassis electrically, or isolate the entire radio case. I think I've still got my Cobra 40 channel CB, european spec with positive ground gathering dust at home somewhere.
