Old is correct, the wire from the distributor should be connected to the positive terminal of the coil. As you have observed that being reversed does not keep a coil from firing, the coil just produces a less than optimal spark. So is this a case of it ran before I messed with it? What else did you do to it? Have you had the distributor out of the engine since it last run?
