You say ..piecing it together for 3 months.. this still does not answer my question. More information please. If he had the engine completely tore down that would be good to know. This would likely mean the distributor has been off the engine. I started to reply asking if you know that a 4 cycle engine has the piston at top dead center two times within the 4 cycles. So if you just line up the timing marks or have the number 1 piston at top dead center the stick your distributor aligned to fire number 1 cylinder you may have it timed to TDC of the exhaust stroke instead of the compression stroke where it needs to be.
